Russian President Vladimir Putin and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met one-on-one, reportedly at Putin’s Moscow residence on Monday. The US reaffirmed its strategic alliance with India.

US State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller addressed inquiries regarding PM Modi’s trip to Moscow by stating that his country, India, is a key partner with whom it has open and honest communication, including discussing its concerns regarding its relationship with Russia.

When asked what the US thought of PM Modi’s trip to Moscow ahead of the NATO 75th anniversary summit, Miller restated the US position that allies of Russia should emphasize that any settlement pertaining to the Ukraine crisis must adhere to the UN charter.

From a daily press briefing, the spokesperson for the US State Department stated that as the world just witnessed, Modi met with Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the president of Ukraine, along with Viktor Orban, the prime minister of Hungary. Apparently, the US believed that was a crucial action to take. Miller further continued that other countries would urge India, as they would any nation dealing with Russia, to make it clear that any settlement to the Ukrainian conflict must respect the UN charter, along with Ukraine’s territorial integrity and its sovereignty.

On Monday night, Prime Minister Modi touched down in Moscow, making it his first trip there since Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022.

Putin invited the prime minister to dinner at his country estate. The Russian president congratulated PM Modi on his historic victory in the general elections of India. Putin reportedly also expressed his admiration for PM Modi’s lifelong commitment to the people of India.

Matthew Miller was also questioned on whether the US had expressed its “concerns” about India’s ties with Russia before PM Modi’s visit to Moscow. On the other hand, he claimed not to be aware of any such specific discussions occurring before the trip.

Miller assured that he’ll check what Prime Minister Modi discussed in his public statements. However, the US already communicated its worries regarding India’s association with Russia to them directly. Therefore, they would expect that when engaging with Russia, any other nation, including India, will make it clear that Russia should respect the UN charter as well as the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine.

Prime Minister Modi is in Russia for two days. Later in the afternoon, he is scheduled to depart for Austria. This visit by the Indian prime minister to the European country will be the first in forty years.
