US and Allies to Intensify Sanctions on Iran Amid Escalating Tensions with Israel

New Delhi: The United States and its allies are gearing up to enforce additional sanctions on Iran following its unprecedented attack on Israel. The aim is to dissuade Israel from escalating the situation further, with its war cabinet scheduled to convene for the third time on Wednesday to chart a course of action. Despite the attack on Saturday resulting in no casualties and minimal damage, concerns are mounting over the escalating violence stemming from the six-month-long Gaza war, potentially leading to direct conflict between Iran and Israel.
Herzi Halevi, Israel’s military chief of staff, has pledged that Iran’s launch of over 300 missiles, cruise missiles, and drones at Israeli territory “will be met with a response,” but has not provided specifics. The war cabinet meeting, originally set for Tuesday, has been postponed until Wednesday, according to an Israeli government source.
The attack on Israel by Iran has prompted a range of reactions from global leaders and experts, urging restraint and expressing apprehension about the possibility of a wider conflict. Colombian President Gustavo Petro warned of the potential onset of “World War III,” criticising the support for certain genocidal actions by major powers and emphasising the urgent need for peace commitments from the United Nations.
UK Defence Secretary Grant Shapps has voiced concerns about the world potentially transitioning “from a post-war to pre-war world,” suggesting possible conflicts involving major global players like China, Russia, North Korea, and Iran within the next five years. Ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and the humanitarian crisis in Gaza have only compounded these fears.
Expert opinions vary, with Hugh Lovatt, a senior policy fellow at the European Council on Foreign Relations, offering a somewhat reassuring perspective. He asserts that despite significant conflicts and tensions in regions like Ukraine, the Middle East, and the Asia-Pacific, they are “separate and not connected.” However, he also highlights the risk of British involvement in Middle Eastern conflicts and underscores the serious concern surrounding the deteriorating international order.
