Upcoming blockbusters of 2024

This Monday, we got a new trailer for Deadpool 3, Twisters, Planet of the Apes, and many more. Not only this, but a few weeks back, Disney announced its upcoming projects, and trailers for animated film sequels Despicable Me 4 and Kung Fu Panda 4 were released. After looking at the current chart of films releasing this year, we can maybe expect another 2023. Of course, there might be no ‘Barbenheimer’ trends this year, but the blockbusters seem promising. Some of the films scheduled to release this year have been postponed to 2025 because of the SAG-AFTRA strikes in the US, which led to the halting of major film productions for a 4-month period. But without further ado, let’s have a look at the list of blockbusters coming out this year:

Dune Part 2:

The epic science fiction film that fans have been waiting for since 2021. The film will follow the journey of Paul Atreides with the Fremen and his quest to seek revenge from the Harkonnens, who killed his father. The film had been delayed for 5 months due to the SAG-AFTRA strikes, which hampered the film’s marketing and box office. Dune Part 2 will be released on 1st March in IMAX, 4DX, and Dolby formats.

Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire:

After witnessing the colossal giants fight each other in theater in 2021, there was a huge surge in audiences returning to theater to watch movies after the Covid Pandemic. This time they unite with each other to fight a new enemy that threatens their own existence. Not only are there furious titans, but also a baby Kong. Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire releases on 29th March in IMAX, Dolby, and 4DX formats.

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire:

When it comes to good legacy sequels, the Ghostbusters seem to have a good run coming. The Spengler family is back in New York, the home of Ghostbusters’ base. Like every time, ghosts are back, and the team must stop them from icing the city. The trailers offer spectacular visuals and a bigger production in the franchise. Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire releases on 22nd March in 4DX and Dolby formats.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga:

This ain’t Mad Max, but it is still full of mad action sequences and a design with the same feel as the 2015 Mad Max film. Set in a post-apocalyptic world, Furiosa must battle her way back to her home with tyrants and dangerous biker gangs in the wasteland. Furiosa releases in theater on 23rd May in IMAX, 4DX, and Dolby.

A Quiet Place: Day One:

A spinoff of the 2018 Quiet Place, which follows the story of people in the city trying to survive an alien invasion and unfolding the story of how the invasion began. This might be a good Dolby Atmos watch, considering how previous films of the franchise were praised for their good sound editing and mixing. A Quiet Place: Day One releases on 28th June in Dolby and 4DX.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes:

Seven years since the last Planet of the Apes film came out, which concluded the trilogy. Now we have a time jump of 300 years showing how the apes have continued to evolve and humans have regressed. Instead of the usual humans hunting apes, it’s now the apes hunting humans. The film franchise has a new director, Wes Ball, who directed the Maze Runner Trilogy. He said that the CGI was tricky in the film, in an effort to create a Pandora-like world but with a dark theme. Plant of the Apes trilogy has been a successful franchise, and the films keep promising better. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes releases on May 10th in IMAX, 4DX, and Dolby.

Inside Out 2:

Blockbusters are not only live-action films but also animated Disney films that have crafted the childhoods of millions of children. The 2015 animated film Inside Out, which received numerous accolades and is regarded as one of the top 10 animated films of the 21st century, gets its sequel this Summer. This film promises more emotions and a deeper study into teenagers nowadays. You might want to get a handkerchief for this film. Inside Out 2 releases on 14th June.

Despicable Me 4:

A movie is only as good as its villain, but here the villain or anti-villain is the star. Gru and his family with the Minions are back in the game when a criminal is back for revenge. There is not much news on the minions we might see in the films except a few or else the core cuteness and entertainment of the film will be low. Despicable Me 4 releases on 4th July.

Twisters:

This might be the oddest pick of the year to watch but might be the high-budget popcorn entertainer which is loud, filled with CGI, destruction at a high level, and a charming Glen Powell. While the first Twister 1996 was a technical marvel and a box office success, the predictions for this film seem quite mixed. Twisters will release in theaters on 19th July.

Deadpool and Wolverine:

One of the most anticipated films of the year has to be Deadpool and Wolverine. Fans have been crazy for the film since the announcement of Hugh Jackman returning for the role of Wolverine. This marks the 10th time the actor will be returning to the character. The trailer has broken records and become the most-viewed trailer in 24 hours. Deadpool 3 can be a promising and mature comeback for Marvel films and probably break the superhero fatigue curse. Deadpool and Wolverine releases on 26 July in 4DX and Dolby.

Kraven: The Hunter:

The second film of the year of the Sony Spider-Man Universe starring Aaron Taylor Johnson as the web slinger’s foe Kraven but in a standalone film. While the film is the first film in the universe to get an R rating, people feel that it can either go good or totally bad owing to the failure of Madame Web. Kraven will release in theater on 30 August.

Joker: Folie a Deux:

A year without a musical film is not possible but the show is presented by Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga in a Joker sequel. This film is going to set up a new stage for DC films called DC Black. The film’s genre is a musical psychological thriller. It will explore the relationship of the Joker and Harley Quinn. Joker Folie a Deux will be released on 4th October.

Venom 3:

Finally coming to the third film of the Sony Spider-Man Universe coming this year awaits a new adventure. While Andy Serkis was unable to return to the director’s chair for this film due to another project, Kelly Marcel who wrote screenplays of the franchise had been signed as director. Shooting for the film is still underway. Venom 3 releases on 8th November.

Gladiator 2:

While some of the audience might be confused with the announcement of the film, Ridley Scott announced that the film will follow Lucius Verus, the son of Maximus’s love Lucilla. While shooting just wrapped in early 2024, the film will release in theater on 22nd November 2024.

Mufasa: The Lion King:

While fans expected a sequel, Disney gave a prequel to the 2019 photorealistic computer-animated Lion King. Most of the cast from the 2019 film returns but the director Jon Favreau will be replaced by Barry Jenkins who directed the Oscar-winning film Moonlight. The plot follows the rise of Mufasa, the King of the Pride lands. The film will release on 20th December 2024.

Sonic The Hedgehog 3:

And finally comes in all its fury and speed, Sonic The Hedgehog 3 releasing along with Mufasa The Lion King. There have been positive reactions to most of the teases and a rumoured return of Jim Carrey from retirement as Dr. Robotnik. And of course, the introduction of Shadow the hedgehog with Tails and Knuckles returning as well. The film is set to clash with Mufasa The Lion King on 20th December 2024.
