In a bizarre incident from Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, a woman eloped with her daughter’s fiancé just days before the scheduled wedding, taking along cash and jewellery worth several lakhs that were meant for the ceremony.
Jitendra Kumar, the bride-to-be’s father, filed a police complaint after discovering that his wife and the groom had vanished, along with ₹3.5 lakh in cash and gold and silver jewellery worth around ₹5 lakh. “My daughter’s wedding was set for April 16. Invitations had been sent out and preparations were underway,” Jitendra said. “But the man she was going to marry barely interacted with her. Instead, he used to talk to my wife for almost 20–22 hours a day. I work in Bengaluru and had only recently come back to the village. Their closeness raised red flags for me.” He added that the groom later said, “You’ve troubled her for 20 years. Now let her live. Forget her.”
The bride, Shivani, voiced her shock and frustration: “My mother ran away with all the cash and jewellery. She followed everything that man told her to do. He brainwashed her. All I want now is to get our belongings back. I don’t care what happens to them anymore.”
Police have registered a missing persons report and launched an investigation to trace the missing pair.
