A 36-year-old woman in Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh, allegedly took her own life after being unable to perform Navratri rituals due to menstruation. Identified as Priyansha Soni, she consumed poison and was initially stabilised at Jhansi Medical College but later died during treatment at the district hospital.
Living with her husband, Mukesh Soni, and their two young daughters, Priyansha had been deeply devoted to Navratri and had made all preparations for the festival. Her husband shared that she became emotionally distressed upon getting her period on the first day of Navratri, which barred her from fasting and performing puja. Despite his reassurances that menstruation is natural, she remained inconsolable, feeling as though she had lost something deeply meaningful.
The following day, while Mukesh was away at his shop, Priyansha allegedly ingested a toxic substance. Although she was initially discharged after treatment, her condition worsened at home. She was taken to the district hospital, where she passed away. Kotwali police have taken her body for post-mortem, and an investigation is underway, confirmed City Police Officer Sneha Tiwari.
