In a bizarre turn of events from Badaun, Uttar Pradesh, a 43-year-old woman named Mamta allegedly fled with her daughter’s father-in-law, 46-year-old Shailendra. The two have reportedly been missing since April 11. The incident comes shortly after a similar case in Aligarh, where a woman eloped with her daughter’s fiancé.
Mamta, a mother of four, is married to Sunil Kumar, a truck driver who claims he visits home only a couple of times a month but consistently sends money to support the family. He told India Today that in his absence, Mamta would frequently invite Shailendra over, ultimately developing an affair with him.
“She used to call my samadhi (daughter’s father-in-law) home and got into an affair. Now she’s disappeared with him along with jewellery and cash,” Sunil Kumar alleged. The couple’s son, Sachin, added that Mamta would call Shailendra every third day and send the children to another room.
Neighbour Awadhesh Kumar corroborated the claims, stating that Shailendra often visited Mamta’s home at night and would leave by morning. A police complaint has been filed by Sunil Kumar, and investigations are underway.
Earlier this month, a similar incident was reported in Aligarh, where 38-year-old Apna Devi eloped with her daughter’s fiancé, Sushant. While the police have detained the duo, they claim to have surrendered willingly, expressing their desire to spend their lives together.
Apna Devi denied allegations of theft, telling the police, “I didn’t take any cash or jewellery. I only want to live with the man I love.” However, her husband, Jitendra Kumar, accused her of taking ₹3 lakh in cash and over ₹5 lakh worth of jewellery meant for their daughter’s wedding on April 16. “She used to talk to our daughter’s fiancé for hours, but we never thought she would take such a step. She’s destroyed us,” he said.
Both incidents have sparked widespread attention across Uttar Pradesh, raising questions about trust, boundaries, and family dynamics.
