Meerut: In the wake of stricter immigration measures following the Pahalgam terror attack, a 38-year-old Pakistani woman, Iram Hasan, has made an emotional appeal to Indian authorities, requesting either permission to stay in the country or to take her young daughter with her as she faces deportation by May 1.

Originally from Lahore, Iram married Bareilly resident Mohd Athar in October 2008 and moved to India six months later. The couple has two children—17-year-old Shahnoor, a student at Central School Bareilly, and 7-year-old Ayesha. However, the marriage ended after Athar allegedly abused Iram and issued triple talaq on June 11, 2024, forcing her out of their home. Since then, she has taken shelter at her aunt’s residence, citing threats from her estranged husband.

Fighting back tears, Iram told TOI, “It’s heartbreaking to leave my daughter behind; she is too young. My son can stay for his education, but my husband abandoned us, and my aunt is elderly—who will care for them? I request PM Modi to allow me to take my daughter with me.”

Her plea comes as the Union Home Ministry tightened its stance on foreign nationals overstaying or with settled legal matters. Authorities in Uttar Pradesh have since launched expulsion proceedings in line with the policy.

According to Vijay Rana, circle officer of LIU, “She had filed a case against her husband and was permitted to stay until it was resolved. However, following the recent government directives, she withdrew the case and is set to leave India within a day or two. We are proceeding as per the rules.”
