Bareilly: Two days after a Dalit wedding procession was allegedly attacked over a dispute involving songs honoring Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar, police arrested four OBC men on Friday evening and sent them to jail.

The accused, reportedly drunk, stopped the procession and allegedly hurled casteist slurs, sparking a heated argument. They then called in reinforcements and assaulted members of the procession. Although local police initially attempted to settle the issue through mediation, an FIR was filed Thursday night after senior officials became aware of the incident. Circle Officer Harshita Singh confirmed that the four accused have been jailed for assault and attempted murder, and that charges under the SC/ST Act are also being investigated.

The incident occurred Wednesday night when a wedding procession for Arjun’s daughter Kajal from Rustampur village, in the Kotwali area, arrived from Dhanora Gori, Sirouli. Around 11:30 PM, as groom Suraj’s procession advanced, songs about Dr. Ambedkar were being played.

Four youths from other castes in the village objected to the music and allegedly made derogatory remarks. During the altercation, three individuals — including cousins of the groom — were severely beaten.

One of the attackers allegedly stole ₹20,000 and a mobile phone. A case was registered by the groom’s cousin, Girish Prasad, against Sonu Yadav, Pinku Yadav, Kanchan Yadav, and Pramod Yadav for attempted murder, assault, and under the SC/ST Act.

As of Friday, all four were jailed, and police forces remained deployed in the village for three days following the incident.
