In the past 24 hours, a tragic incident occurred during Garba celebrations in Gujarat, resulting in the loss of at least 10 lives. The victims ranged in age from teenagers to middle-aged individuals, with the youngest being a 13-year-old boy from Dabhoi, Baroda. Among the casualties, a 24-year-old man from Ahmedabad and a 17-year-old boy from Kapadwanj tragically lost their lives while participating in Garba.
This distressing series of incidents is part of a concerning trend that has been observed in the state recently. In fact, within the first six days of Navratri, the 108 emergency ambulance services received a staggering 521 calls related to heart issues and an additional 609 calls regarding breathlessness. These distress calls were predominantly made between 6 pm and 2 am, coinciding with the customary timing of Garba celebrations.
The gravity of the situation has prompted both the government and event organizers to take immediate action. The state government has issued an alert to all government hospitals and community health centers near Garba venues, urging them to remain vigilant. In collaboration with this effort, Garba organizers have been instructed to establish clear pathways for ambulances to swiftly access the event locations during emergencies.
Furthermore, organizers have proactively implemented measures to ensure the safety of participants. This includes the presence of doctors and ambulances at the venues, as well as providing CPR training to their staff. Additionally, organizers have been advised to ensure an ample supply of water for the participants.
The severity of these incidents and the potential risks associated with Garba celebrations have necessitated immediate action from both the government and event organizers. It is crucial to prioritize the safety and well-being of individuals participating in such events to prevent further tragedies.
