University Grants Commission Introduces ‘Ayurveda Biology’ as a Subject in UGC NET Exam

An expert committee from the 581st meeting of the UGC, held on June 25, 2024, recommended Ayurveda Biology to be included as a subject in the UGC NET exam 2024. The recommendation was made to promote the traditional medicine practice and to recognize the official status of Ayurveda biology within the academic field.
From the December 2024 session of the UGC NET exam, Ayurveda Biology will also be available as a subject to choose from the official website. This addition aligns with the UGC’s objective to broaden academic options by embracing India’s traditional sciences alongside modern disciplines.
According to the official notification of the UGC, it was stated, “Based on the expert committee’s recommendations, the Commission, in its 581st meeting held on 25th June, 2024, has decided to add Ayurveda Biology as an additional subject from December 2024 onwards to the existing list of subjects of UGC-NET.”
The syllabus for Ayurveda Biology comprises 10 units, covering specific topics mentioned below:
- History and Development of Ayurveda
- Philosophy and Fundamental Principles of Ayurveda
- Sharira Rachna and Kriya
- Padartha Vijnana and Dravya Vijnana
- Rasa Shastra, Bheshajya Kalpana, and Ayurvedic Pharmacopeia
- Disease Biology, Microbiology, and Immunology
- Genetics, Ayurgenomics, Cell and Molecular Biology
- Physiology, Biochemistry, and Nanotechnology
- Biodiversity and Environmental Health, IPR, and Entrepreneurship
- Research Methodology, Biostatistics, and Ayurveda-informatics
UGC NET is a computer-based assessment exam that determines the eligibility of students for Assistant Professor and Junior Research Fellow positions all over India in different subjects. After the addition of Ayurveda Biology, it will surely increase students’ interest in traditional medicinal practices and improve the ratio of scholars inclined toward Ayurveda Biology.
