Union Home Minister Amit Shah Announces Creation of 5 New Districts in Ladakh

New Delhi, August 26, 2024: In a significant move towards better governance and prosperity, Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced the creation of five new districts in the Union Territory (UT) of Ladakh on Monday.
“The new districts, namely Zanskar, Drass, Sham, Nubra, and Changthang, aim to bring benefits to the doorsteps of the people by bolstering governance in every nook and cranny,” Shah said in a post on X.
Ladakh, with its vast area and sparse population, has faced challenges in reaching the grassroots level due to its difficult and inaccessible terrain. The formation of these districts will enable public welfare schemes to reach the people easily, benefiting more individuals.
The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has given “in-principle approval” for the formation of the new districts and asked the Ladakh administration to form a committee to assess various aspects related to their formation. The committee’s report is expected within three months.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed the creation of the new districts as a step towards better governance and prosperity, saying they will receive more focused attention, bringing services and opportunities closer to the people.
The development comes five years after Ladakh was made a UT, following the bifurcation of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir. The region has since received significant attention from the Center, with nine projects worth Rs 21,441 crore exclusively allocated for its development under the Prime Minister Development Package (PMDP).
