In a significant move, the Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved the establishment of the 8th Pay Commission on Thursday. This commission aims to revise the salaries of central government employees and allowances for pensioners. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw confirmed the decision, emphasising its timely setup ahead of the 7th Pay Commission’s term ending in 2026.
The 7th Pay Commission, formed in 2016, had a 10-year tenure. Since India’s independence, seven Central Pay Commissions have been constituted, with each commission typically established every decade to ensure periodic salary revisions for central employees and pensioners.
The 8th Pay Commission is set to benefit over 49 lakh central government employees and nearly 65 lakh pensioners, including defence personnel. Around 50 lakh employees are expected to see salary hikes, and 65 lakh pensioners, including those from the defence sector, will gain improved benefits. In Delhi alone, approximately four lakh employees, including state government workers and defence personnel, are anticipated to benefit.
Minister Vaishnaw stated that appointing the chairman and two members of the commission would happen soon, with consultations involving central and state governments, as well as other stakeholders. He added that initiating the process well before the 7th Pay Commission’s conclusion in 2026 allows sufficient time for recommendations.
The announcement comes shortly before the Union Budget 2025, scheduled for February 1, and the Delhi Assembly elections on February 5. Prime Minister Modi highlighted the decision’s impact on improving the quality of life and boosting consumption in a post on X.
