New Delhi: The full Budget for the year 2024-25 will be presented on July 23, with the Parliament session beginning a day earlier, Union Minister Kiren Rijiju announced on Saturday.

The Parliamentary Affairs Minister stated that the Budget session will start on July 22 and is scheduled to conclude on August 12. “The Hon’ble President of India, on the recommendation of the Government of India, has approved the proposal to summon both Houses of Parliament for the Budget Session 2024 from July 22, 2024, to August 12, 2024 (subject to the exigencies of Parliamentary business). The Union Budget 2024-25 will be presented in Lok Sabha on July 23, 2024,” the minister posted on X.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, who had presented an interim Budget in February due to the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, will be presenting her seventh consecutive Budget. This milestone makes her the first finance minister in India’s history to do so, surpassing the previous record set by Morarji Desai.

This will be the first Budget presented during Narendra Modi’s third term as Prime Minister and the first in which the BJP does not hold a majority on its own.

Expectations for the Budget are high, further fuelled by President Droupadi Murmu’s statement during her joint address that it will include “many historic steps” and accelerate the pace of reforms. She described the Budget as an effective document of the government’s far-reaching policies and futuristic vision. Along with major economic and social decisions, the Budget is expected to feature historic steps that will speed up reforms in line with the aspirations of the Indian people for rapid development, as she stated on June 27.

Among the most anticipated changes is an alteration in the income tax structure, which is expected to leave more disposable income in the hands of the middle and salaried classes.

The special session of Parliament, the first in the 18th Lok Sabha, saw intense debates with a strengthened opposition led by the new Leader of the Opposition in the House, Rahul Gandhi. In the general elections, the results of which were declared on June 4, the INDIA alliance won 232 seats, restricting the BJP to 240.

However, the NDA still holds a comfortable majority with 293 MPs. Issues such as the NEET paper leak, the situation in Manipur, the Emergency, the Agnipath scheme, and the alleged undermining of the Constitution by the ruling party dominated the special session and are expected to be prominent in the Budget session as well.
