Uncertainty Surrounds Bengaluru’s Namma Metro Expansion as Lok Sabha Polls Cast Shadow on Green and Yellow Lines Launch
The expansion of Bengaluru’s Namma Metro network continues to captivate residents and commuters, with the eagerly anticipated Green Line extension from Nagasandra to Madavara and the introduction of the Yellow Line. However, recent reports tying the project’s timeline to the tentative Lok Sabha polls in 2024 have injected an element of uncertainty.
Set for a July 2024 launch, the Green Line extension, previously known as the Bangalore International Exhibition Centre (BIEC) line, will encompass three stations: Manjunathnagar, Chikkabidarakallu, and Madavara. While the majority of tasks are completed, the next phase involves train trial runs, safety inspections, and finalizing minor station-related details.
Initiated in 2017, the construction of the fully elevated Green Line’s northern extension faced setbacks due to land acquisition delays. The inauguration of the southern extension to Silk Institute on Kanakapura Road in January 2021 extended the Green Line to a total length of 33 km.
In parallel, the driverless Namma Metro Yellow Line, representing a significant growth phase, experiences a delay in its launch from February to July due to glitches in coach delivery. Despite being near completion, logistical constraints arising from the Lok Sabha elections present challenges for the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL).
Originally planning to kick off operations on the Green Line extension and introduce the Yellow Line in July, the BMRCL foresees delays in obtaining essential clearances, approvals, and coordination amidst the ongoing electoral process. This is anticipated to impact the smooth launch of both metro lines.
