President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and his defense minister hailed the establishment of a 20-nation “coalition” by Ukraine’s Western allies on Thursday, to strengthen air defenses, which are regarded as a crucial component of the nation’s military campaign against Russian forces.
Zelenskiy stated that the group was established during a virtual meeting of the “Ramstein group” that looked at Ukraine’s military requirements. It is one of several groups focused on particular aspects of Ukraine’s defense.
Germany and France will assume the leading roles in the group, according to a post made earlier by Germany’s Defense Ministry on X, the former Twitter platform.
Zelenskiy said in his nightly video address, “Thanks to every country participating in these efforts for enabling our cities and villages to be better protected against Russian attacks.” “Not everything can be disclosed publicly at this time, but the Ukrainian air shield is becoming stronger every month.”
Rustem Umerov, the minister of defence, also mentioned other aid that the parties had agreed upon, such as the German air defense package that was revealed this week while Defence Minister Boris Pistorius was in Kiev. A Dutch package and Estonian financing for IT assistance were also mentioned.
General Valery Zaluzhniy, the head of Ukraine’s armed forces, reported on Telegram that he attended the meeting for the first time and described the situation on the 1,000-kilometer (600-mile) front as “complicated but controllable”.
Improved air defense has long been cited by Zelenskiy as a crucial component in preventing Russian airstrikes on Ukrainian cities, particularly those targeting energy infrastructure, as winter approaches.
At various points during the conflict, which is soon to enter its twenty-first month, Russia has attacked Ukrainian power plants and other infrastructure.
Although Russia disputes that it targets civilians, missile and drone strikes have also struck apartment buildings and other non-military locations.
