A man accused of scamming widowed and divorced women by pretending to seek marriage was arrested in Pipliyahana, Indore, on Saturday. Over the past seven years, the accused is believed to have defrauded around 80 women using similar tactics.
Ashok Patidar, in charge of the Badnagar police station, identified the man as Sachin Jagtap. He reportedly connected with a divorced woman from Badnagar via a matrimonial website, where he specifically mentioned his interest in marrying only widowed or divorced women. Claiming to be a wealthy businessman facing financial setbacks, he visited her multiple times and convinced her to transfer Rs 12 lakh over several months, along with an iPhone.
In another case, he lured a widowed woman from Ujjain using a similar approach—claiming to be separated from his wife and raising a child. He persuaded her to transfer Rs 3.5 lakh online within two months. After both women realized they had been deceived, they lodged complaints with the Badnagar police.
Authorities then set a trap using one of the women to call him for a meeting, during which he was arrested on Saturday.
During questioning, Jagtap confessed to cheating over 80 women since 2018, targeting them in public places. He was previously married in Pune and currently lives in Indore with a woman from Mumbai in a live-in relationship. Holding MA and MCom degrees and fluent in English, Hindi, and Marathi, he used his communication skills to manipulate victims—most of whom were widows, divorcees, or single mothers.
