UGC’s New 2-Year Undergraduate Program: What Students Need to Know
Discover how UGC’s new accelerated degree program could change your education journey.
A new approach with flexible options for completing degree programs is going to be introduced by the University Grants Commission from the 2025-2026 academic year. Now, students will have the choice of completing their three-year degree program in two years, or they may have the option to accelerate their three-year or four-year degree program by an additional year as well. This means they will have the option to extend their program by one more year, or they can complete their degrees in one preceding year
This new approach to completing degrees would help students manage high workloads and extra assignments, leading to a quicker path to graduation for them. The consideration of this new education framework was done while taking the NEP (New Education Policy) 2020 into account. The NEP framework encourages lifelong learning by allowing students to leave and re-enter educational institutions without losing previously acquired credits. This technique reduces dropout rates and promotes lifelong education.
UGC Chairman, M. Jagadesh Kumar, articulated the goal of giving students greater control over their education, allowing them to choose a pace that suits their needs without compromising academic goals. A specialized educational structure will help students achieve greater success while completing their academic curriculum. He mentioned that students who choose the accelerated track could complete their degrees up to a year earlier, potentially entering the workforce or pursuing further studies ahead of schedule.
Completion of a three-year degree program in two years and the option to extend the same program by one more year as required will definitely help students in their academic studies, pertaining to the current scenario of the education sector. An extension of one more year for undergraduate degrees will not only reduce study pressure among students but will also boost their performance while completing their academic curriculum.
