The UAE’s General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) has revealed a historic accomplishment that strengthens the country’s standing in the world aviation community. In 2024, the Sheikh Zayed Air Navigation Centre achieved a historic milestone by surpassing one million air traffic movements.
In a press statement issued today, the GCAA celebrated this milestone as a significant achievement in the UAE’s aviation journey, which has long been recognised for its excellence and innovation.
This remarkable success further cements the UAE’s position as an important global aviation hub, thanks to its strategic location, state-of-the-art infrastructure, and highly efficient operational systems.
Reaching the milestone of one million air traffic movements in a year underlines the tireless efforts of both the GCAA and the Sheikh Zayed Air Navigation Centre to provide world-class air navigation services. These efforts meet the needs of international airlines and enhance the air travel experience for passengers around the world.
Abdullah bin Touq Al Marri, Minister of Economy and Chairman of GCAA, commented, “Guided by our visionary leadership, the UAE has implemented pioneering national initiatives and strategies to strengthen its competitiveness and prominence in the civil aviation and air services sector regionally and globally.”
He added, “Achieving one million air traffic movements in a year is not just a numerical milestone; it reflects the UAE’s unwavering commitment to developing aviation as a cornerstone of the national economy, reinforcing its position as a global air transport hub.”
Al Marri also highlighted the UAE’s growing potential, saying, “With air traffic growing by more than 20% in the past two years, the highest globally, the UAE is well-positioned to manage even greater volumes in the future, supported by advanced infrastructure, a skilled workforce, and cutting-edge technologies.”
Saif Mohammed Al Suwaidi, Director-General of GCAA, said, “Surpassing one million air traffic movements reflects the dedication and hard work of the Sheikh Zayed Air Navigation Centre team. This achievement is the result of years of strategic planning, innovation, and strong partnerships within the aviation sector.”
Al Suwaidi further added that with an average growth rate of 10.3% in 2024 compared to 2023, GCAA is committed to enhancing its systems and services to maintain the highest standards of safety and efficiency. “This achievement reflects sustainable growth and our continued success in managing air traffic in a safe and professional manner,” he added.
On December 22, 2024, Emirates Flight 305 arrived from Shanghai, marking the historic one millionth air traffic movement. Sheikh Zayed Air Navigation Centre’s commitment to implementing cutting-edge technologies and achieving excellence in the aviation industry is demonstrated by this milestone. This achievement also highlights the UAE’s strategic strategy, which emphasises sustainability, innovation, and leadership. Sheikh Zayed Air Navigation Centre has set a standard for airspace management by proving its ability to effectively and adaptively handle the continued growth in air traffic as the world’s aviation sector recovers from the difficulties of the pandemic.
By 2024, the Centre made significant progress, including the integration of advanced systems and the adoption of innovative solutions to improve airspace efficiency and reduce delays. In line with the “We the UAE 2031” vision and “The Year of Sustainability,” the Centre implemented sustainable practices that contribute to the country’s environmental goals and reduce the aviation sector’s ecological footprint.
In addition, the Centre increased the airspace’s capacity to meet growing demand while ensuring the highest standards of safety and reliability, further strengthening global airlines’ confidence in the UAE’s services.
