Moscow has dismissed warnings issued by the United States regarding its space nuclear capabilities. The Kremlin states that the reports are a malicious fabrication aimed at getting U.S. lawmakers to approve new methods to counter Russia.

The United States Congress and its European allies know about the new Russian nuclear capabilities. These capabilities could pose a massive threat to international safety. According to U.S. officials, the issue was that they were developing an anti-satellite device. Thus, it does not pose an immediate threat.

Dmitry Peskov, a Kremlin spokesperson, states that he will not comment on the White House reports until they provide further information. However, he is sure that the warnings are an attempt by the United States Congress to raise more money.

TASS, the Russian news agency, reported that Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov, who is in charge of arms control, commented that the warnings were malicious fabrications.

During a visit to Tirana, Albania, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken commented that the United States and its allies are discussing the issue. He further comments that, while the threat is not an active liability but a potential one, Washington is taking the threat very seriously. Hence, the White House will release other comments in the future.

Since Russia waged war against Ukraine in 2022, tension between the West and Russia has been high. It is a massive confrontation since the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962. Moscow and Washington are warning of conflicts arising between Russia and NATO.

Russia and the United States are the biggest holders of nuclear power. They possess approximately 90% of the world’s nuclear power combined. The United States and Russia have also launched several advanced military satellites into space. These satellites are orbiting the Earth.

John Kirby, a White House national security spokesperson, commented that Russia has developed a space-based, anti-satellite weapon. However, such a weapon has not been in sight. President Joe Biden has requested direct diplomatic communication with Moscow regarding it.

The details of the weapon are unclear, but analysts claim that it is a device that can blind, jam, or fry electronics inside satellites. Thus, the nuclear component is not a warhead but a jamming device.

During the Cold War, Russia achieved early success in space travel and developing intercontinental missiles. The West was intimidated by their success and thus proposed a treaty to ban nuclear weapons in space. Hence, the 1967 Outer Space Treaty was born.
