Hyderabad: Telangana journalists Pogadadanda Revathi, Managing Director of Pulse News, and Thanvi Yadav, a reporter for the same channel, were arrested by Hyderabad Police’s Cyber Crime division on Wednesday for allegedly posting and amplifying abusive content against Chief Minister Revanth Reddy.
A third individual, the user of an X account named ‘NippuKodi,’ has also been detained.
The arrests followed a complaint from the chief of the Congress’ state social media unit. The accused face serious charges, including publishing obscene material, organised crime, criminal conspiracy, spreading rumours to incite hatred, and provoking a breach of peace.
The complaint centers around a video posted on the X account, where a Pulse News reporter interviews an individual who allegedly made “derogatory” and “abusive” remarks about the Chief Minister. Authorities claim the video was a “highly provocative” post aimed at inciting violence and was a “deliberate attempt by Pulse TV to defame and spread propaganda.”
However, the arrests have sparked strong criticism from the opposition BRS, which was unseated by the Congress in the 2023 elections. BRS leader KT Rama Rao accused the Congress of displaying “intolerance to criticism” and likened the situation to an “Emergency-like rule” in Telangana.
“It feels like a state of Emergency has returned in Telangana,” Rao told NDTV.
In a detailed post on X, he claimed that Revathi was arrested illegally, with police raiding her home at 5 AM, which he called a sign of the Congress’ “Emergency-style governance.” He also condemned Yadav’s arrest, calling it “atrocious” and an attack on press freedom.
“The arrest of journalists for sharing a video of a farmer speaking about hardships under the Congress government shows how oppressive this administration has become. Is this the constitutional rule Rahul Gandhi was speaking about?” Rao questioned.
Notably, Revathi had previously been arrested in a similar manner when the BRS was in power.
The BJP also weighed in, with party leader Shehzad Poonawalla slamming the Congress for arresting a senior journalist simply for highlighting the struggles of Telangana’s farmers.
