Dharwad: The Vidyagiri police have arrested four individuals in connection with a kidnapping case and successfully rescued six children. Interestingly, the primary suspects turned out to be the children’s mothers, Reshma Sambrani and Priyanka Sambrani, residents of Toll Naka in Dharwad. The other accused are Sunil Karigar from Bhusappa Chowk, Dharwad, and Mutturaj B from Shikaripur.
According to the police, Reshma and Priyanka, daughters-in-law of the Sambrani family, took the six children—Krishna Sambrani (10), Suraj (7), Sinchana (6), Sanvi (7), Satwik (6), and Manvit (3)—on November 5, under the pretext of dropping them at school but did not return. Reshma’s husband, Deepak Sambrani, and father of some of the children, filed a missing persons report at the Vidyagiri police station the same day. Shortly after, Deepak received a ransom call demanding ₹10 lakh for the children’s release.
The police immediately launched a search operation, dispatching teams to Hyderabad, Maharashtra, and Bengaluru. Eventually, the women and children were located in Attigere, Bengaluru, accompanied by two men. A team led by Inspector Sangamesh Didiginal apprehended them and brought them back to Dharwad for questioning.
Investigations revealed that Reshma had an extramarital affair with Sunil Karigar, while Priyanka, a widow, was in a relationship with Mutturaj, who has a criminal history. The Sambrani family had opposed these relationships, leading to frequent domestic disputes. The two women had reportedly threatened to leave the family, taking the children with them. It was Mutturaj who made the ransom call to the family.
Inspector Sangamesh stated, “The case is still under investigation. The accused have been remanded to judicial custody, and the children have been placed under the care of the Child Welfare Committee, which will hand them over to their grandparents.”
