The supporters of East Bengal and Mohun Bagan football teams, normally arch-rivals in football, showed this time a great show of unity to protest against a ghastly act. Hundreds of fans from both sides gathered in Salt Lake, Kolkata, to protest and seek justice for the doctor who was allegedly raped and killed at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Apart from sport, it united two of Kolkata’s biggest fan groups in a rare display of solidarity and shook the conscience of this city like nothing else.
The rivalry between East Bengal and Mohun Bagan dates back a century and was between the two most legendary teams in India. Their die-hard fans are known for their dedication towards the respective teams and often get involved in hot arguments during matches. But this time, the zeal for victory rose above the victim’s cause.
Matching in their respective team regalia, supporting team members matched past each other, carrying placards with slogans demanding justice. Their protest in front of Salt Lake Stadium, a football field synonymous with rivalry, turned into a social justice movement. There are certain issues bigger than rivalries or competitions, and their unity was the proof of the same.
Much anger has been expressed in Kolkata for the unfortunate incident involving the young doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. In disbelief, the community awaits the details of the crime and finds answers after it is claimed that the doctor was murdered under unexplained circumstances after being raped.
With the involvement of prominent football fan bases, the case gained much visibility, exposing its deep roots in Kolkata. The leaders of the Mohun Bagan and East Bengal fan groups, in their speeches, valued unity against a heinous crime like this. They urged the administration to ensure a proper and timely investigation into the incident so that justice can be delivered to all concerned. This unlikely case of unity in Kolkata’s football fraternity becomes an example of just how strong community activity can get during hard times. This works as a reminder that while athletics may separate people, the pursuit of justice and peace unites people.
