Two diplomats from Bangladesh’s High Commission in India have been relieved of their duties at the request of the country’s interim government. The officials removed are Shaban Mahmud and Ranjan Sen, both serving as First Secretaries (Press). This decision, reported by India Today, took effect on August 17.
Mahmud and Sen were asked to leave their positions before the end of their contracts. Earlier this month, Sheikh Hasina was forced to flee to New Delhi by military helicopter after violent mobs threatened her safety following prolonged protests against government job quotas. After her departure, angry mobs ransacked her official residence.
While reports suggest Sheikh Hasina sought asylum in Europe, her son denied these claims. Amid the chaos, India evacuated “non-essential” staff and diplomats’ families from Dhaka. In addition, the Bangladesh interim government revoked Sheikh Hasina’s diplomatic passport, along with those of her advisors, ex-cabinet members, and former members of the recently dissolved 12th Parliament, including their spouses.
Currently, Sheikh Hasina is in a safe house in India, but her future remains uncertain. According to The Daily Star, she holds no passport other than her now-revoked diplomatic one. Under Indian visa policy, Bangladeshi citizens with diplomatic or official passports are eligible for visa-free entry for up to 45 days. As of Saturday, Hasina had already spent 20 days in India, with her legal stay nearing its end.
