Two Arrested From Chhattisgarh in Delhi Jewelry Theft Case
The Chhattisgarh police have arrested two people in connection with the theft of jewelry worth more than Rs 20 crore from a store in New Delhi, and they have also found approximately 18.5 kg of gold and diamond jewelry, senior officials said on Friday.
According to Superintendent of Police (SP) Santosh Singh of the Bilaspur district, a joint team of the anti-crime and cyber unit and Civil Line Police Station conducted the operation while looking into a string of thefts in Bilaspur city.
On Thursday, the accused allegedly broke into a jewelry store in Jangpura, South Delhi, and made off with items valued at 20–25 crore rupees. The incident happened between Sunday evening and Thursday morning at Umrao Jewellers in the Bhogal neighborhood.
According to him, Lokesh Srivas and Shiva Chandravanshi have been named as the people arrested. He said that Srivas was connected to seven thefts that occurred in Bilaspur.
The combined team of Bilaspur police launched a raid in Kawardha town in the Kabirdham district of the state on Wednesday after receiving a tip that Srivas was present there, according to him. Chandravanshi was also taken into custody along with jewelry valued at Rs 23 lakh. By then, Srivas had succeeded in escaping, according to the SP.
With the aid of the Durg police, the team eventually located Srivas at a residence in the vicinity of the Smritinagar police station in the Durg district, he claimed.
According to Singh, the police seized 18.5 kg of gold and diamond jewelry as well as Rs 12.5 lakh in cash from his hands.
The investigation revealed that the jewelry was stolen from a New Delhi store and was worth millions of rupees, the man said.
He stated that a team from the Delhi police had also traveled to Chhattisgarh and that more inquiry was being conducted.
