Two Arrested After Rickshaw Driver Killed by Speeding SUV in Mumbai

Mumbai, August 14, 2024: The Versova police have arrested two men in connection with the tragic death of a 36-year-old rickshaw driver, Ganesh Yadav, who was crushed to death by a speeding SUV near Versova Beach on August 12. The accused, Nikhil Jawale (34) and Shubham Dongre (33), have been charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
According to police reports, Yadav and another rickshaw driver, Bablu Srivastava, were sleeping near the beach in the early hours of the morning to escape the city’s humidity. Srivastava was suddenly awakened by an impact on his head and hand, only to witness the SUV run over his friend, Ganesh Yadav.
The police promptly arrested the two suspects and presented them before a local court in Andheri, where they were remanded to five days in police custody for further investigation. Blood samples from the accused have been sent for testing to determine if they were under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident.
This incident is one of several recent hit-and-run cases in Mumbai. On July 7, a woman on a two-wheeler was killed when a speeding BMW struck her bike and dragged her over 100 meters. The accused in that case, Mihir Shah, was arrested 58 hours later and placed in 14-day judicial custody. A forensic report received on August 10 indicated that Shah was not under the influence of alcohol during the accident, contradicting earlier reports and CCTV footage suggesting he had been at a high-profile bar before the incident.
