Trump Doesn’t Take the Stand: For the last few weeks, Trump has been repeatedly teased that he could take the stand in his own defense. But surprisingly, on Tuesday the opportunity for Trump to testify came and went quickly, with the attorney stating, “the defense would rest its case” after the Cohen hearing. Now, this is considered to be a calculated move by Trump and his attorneys, as they should remain away from the witness stand. The prosecution could cross-examine Trump, and they could ask the judge to allow them to ask questions about his former misdeeds in other old cases against him, which would impeach Trump’s credibility as a witness. There were also chances that the prosecution could cross-examine him by asking questions related to his alleged affair with Stormy Daniels and Karen McDougal.
The Most Important Cross-Examination for the Defense Was Cohen’s Cross-Examination:
This was the most important and the most dramatic cross-examination that had ever taken place. The defense made back-and-forth attempts to discredit Cohen, and there were also attempts by the prosecution to rehabilitate Cohen’s testimony. The most dramatic moment came when Blanche confronted Cohen regarding his exchange of messages on October 24, 2016, where he had called Trump’s bodyguard Keith Schiller at 8:02 pm. Cohen testified that he put Trump on the line and told Cohen to go ahead with the payment to Daniels while questioning his credibility by saying he exchanged messages with Schiller for help as he had been receiving prank calls from a teenager.
Costello Had a Bumpy Ride of an Argument:
There were many attempts by Hoffinger to discredit Costello. In fact, tension sparked between the judge and Costello after his statement on Monday, as well as the prosecution trying to acknowledge that he offered Cohen a backchannel to Trump through Giuliani, but Costello stated that it was for Cohen’s benefit only.
Next Hearing Set for Tuesday:
The judge has decided the date of the next hearing on Tuesday, May 28, 2024. Once the jury gets the instructions, Trump’s fate will be in its hands.
