As election rivalry escalates between current President Joe Biden and the recently convicted former President Donald Trump in the United States, both parties attempt desperately to win public support for the upcoming national elections in November.

On Saturday, Donald Trump made two speeches urging Christian supporters to visit the polls “one last time” in order to vote for him. He also promised to fix a city “ravaged by bloodshed,” in an attempt to appeal to Black voters in Philadelphia, despite data that shows a decline in violent crime. He also addressed a group of evangelicals in his speech, telling them that they “cannot afford to sit on the sidelines,” and imploring them at one point to “go and vote, Christians, please!”

The Republican presidential candidate told a rally of several thousand people in an address at Philadelphia Temple University that he would give police forces “immunity” to carry out their duties and “surge” funds to cities that are battling violence, despite data that shows otherwise. He dismissed the FBI statistics that showed a continued drop in violence and murder during the first three months of 2024 as “fake,” accusing Democratic candidate Joe Biden of forging the data. Addressing a historically Black neighborhood and an audience that was typically more diverse than Trump’s usual rallies, he said: “Under crooked Joe Biden the City of Brotherly Love is being ravaged by bloodshed and crime.” He also added that he would bring back “law and order and safety back to our streets” if elected in November.

The promise being made to fight crime is part of a larger strategy that aims to get Black people and Hispanics on board with the Republican Administration, as the Trump campaign has been encouraged by some opinion polls that they may be gaining some ground in these areas. He also portrayed migrants entering the country illegally as “dangerous,” claiming that they pose a threat to the jobs of Black people and Hispanics. As Trump has little chance of claiming victory in Philadelphia, which Democratic President Joe Biden won easily in the 2020 elections, he hopes to narrow the margin for the upcoming November elections.

Meanwhile, Trump also attempted to appeal to Christian voters in an event organized by Faith and Freedom Coalition on Saturday, while speaking to the group of politically influential evangelicals in Washington. “Has anyone read the ‘Thou shalt not steal’? I mean, has anybody read this incredible stuff? It’s just incredible. They don’t want it to go up. It’s a crazy world,’’ Trump said, with reference to a new law passed in Louisiana this week that requires the Ten Commandments to be displayed in every public school classroom. He also urged Christians to vote for him one last time this November, claiming that despite the power possessed by Christians, “they don’t vote that much.”

He also briefly mentioned his stance on abortion, a topic sensitive to the group, and reiterated his stance that decision-making regarding the procedure must be undertaken by voters on a state-to-state basis. Trump’s stance on abortion contradicts that of many conservative Christians, as he refuses to push for or even address federal regulations on the issue. He has repeatedly claimed that the Republican Party would face electoral defeat if they take too harsh of a stance on abortion rights.

He was applauded for his discussion of other proposals, such as the scrapping of the Department of Education, which many conservatives accuse of clamping down on “faith-based” teaching methods.
