Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has emphasized that Canada does not seek a confrontation with India but aims to engage constructively in resolving a “very serious matter.” Trudeau accused India of breaching the Vienna Convention, asserting that over 40 Canadian diplomats were relocated after threats to strip them of diplomatic immunity.
The escalating tensions between the two nations originated from Trudeau’s September allegations, implicating Indian involvement in the killing of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in British Columbia on June 18. India promptly dismissed these claims as both “absurd” and “motivated.”
In a press conference on Friday, Trudeau reiterated his stance, stating, “A fight with India is not something Canada wants right now,” but stressed the need to address the alleged violations seriously. The diplomatic strains heightened when India designated Nijjar as a terrorist in 2020.
Trudeau revealed that Canada had approached India, urging cooperation in investigating the matter. “From the very beginning, when we learned of credible allegations involving agents of the Indian government in the killing of a Canadian citizen on Canadian soil, we reached out to India to work together in getting to the bottom of this matter,” he asserted.
The Canadian Prime Minister called upon international allies, including the United States, to collaborate in addressing what he deemed a “serious violation of international law and the sovereignty of a democracy.” Trudeau emphasized the gravity of the situation, signaling Canada’s commitment to pursuing a resolution through diplomatic channels.
As both nations navigate this delicate diplomatic dispute, the international community watches closely to see if a collaborative approach can be forged to resolve the tensions and maintain stability in their relations.
