Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has called upon India to take the investigation into the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar in British Columbia seriously, following assertions by the United States of thwarting an assassination plot against a Sikh separatist on American soil. Trudeau’s remarks underscored the need for India’s cooperation in the ongoing probe, emphasizing the seriousness of the situation.

The United States recently charged Nikhil Gupta, an Indian national, with conspiracy to murder Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, who holds US citizenship and has been designated a terrorist by India. This development comes in the wake of Canada’s statement about “credible” allegations linking Indian agents to Nijjar’s killing in June. However, India staunchly rebuffed these allegations, urging Canada to provide substantial evidence.

Despite the US indictment of Gupta and their push for his extradition, Indian authorities have highlighted the absence of concrete evidence linking Gupta to Indian agencies tasked with the alleged assassination. Sources indicate that both New Delhi and Washington are engaged in ongoing discussions to prevent any strain in their relationship over this issue.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) of India confirmed that they consider security inputs from the US seriously. MEA spokesperson Arindam Bagchi noted that during recent discussions on India-US security cooperation, the US shared inputs regarding connections between organized criminals, gun runners, terrorists, and others. These inputs were a cause of concern for both nations, leading to a consensus to undertake necessary follow-up actions.

Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly also seized the opportunity to advocate for the return of Canadian diplomats who were compelled to leave India, citing diplomatic parity. The forced departure of these diplomats was met with hopes for their prompt reinstatement to resume their roles in India.

Amidst these developments, India stands firm on its stance, affirming the absence of substantial evidence against Gupta. The ongoing dialogue between India and the US underscores their mutual commitment to address security challenges collaboratively.

Trudeau’s call for India’s cooperation aligns with the broader conversation surrounding the investigation into Nijjar’s killing and the recent US charges against Gupta. This dynamic situation emphasizes the need for thorough investigations and evidence-based conclusions to prevent diplomatic tensions and ensure justice prevails.

The interactions between India, Canada, and the US reflect the complexities of handling cross-border security matters. As discussions continue between the concerned nations, the spotlight remains on the need for transparent investigations and international cooperation to address such sensitive issues effectively.
