A 21-year-old tribal woman, Kamleshwari Pradhan, has alleged that she was coerced and assaulted by Bajrang Dal activists into giving a false statement against two Kerala nuns, Preethi Mary and Vandana Francis, who were arrested for alleged human trafficking and forceful conversion. The nuns, along with Sukhman Mandavi, were arrested by the Government Railway Police (GRP) at Durg railway station in Chhattisgarh on July 25.

The Incident
Pradhan claimed she was traveling with the nuns to Agra, where they planned to work at a Christian hospital, with her parents’ consent. However, at the railway station, they were confronted by Bajrang Dal members, who accused them of human trafficking and forced conversion. Pradhan alleged that a woman associated with a right-wing outfit, Jyoti Sharma, slapped her and threatened to implicate her brother in a false case if she didn’t change her statement.

Bajrang Dal’s Response
Ravi Nigam, convener of the Bajrang Dal’s Durg unit, denied the allegations, stating that there were CCTV cameras at the railway station that would reveal the truth. Rishi Mishra, Chhattisgarh coordinator of Bajrang Dal, claimed that a rickshaw driver associated with the organization had overheard the conversation between the nuns and the woman and suspected human trafficking.

Court Proceedings
A sessions court in Durg district has rejected the bail applications of the three accused, stating that it does not have jurisdiction to hear the case. The accused will have to move a special NIA court for relief.
