In a devastating turn of events, a six-year-old girl named Hind Rajab, who had gone missing in Gaza City last month, was found dead along with several of her relatives and two paramedics who attempted to rescue her.

Hind, along with her aunt, uncle, and three cousins, was fleeing the city when the car they were traveling in encountered Israeli tanks and came under fire. Audio recordings of calls between Hind and emergency operators suggest that she was the sole survivor in the vehicle, hiding among the bodies of her relatives as gunfire raged around them.

Despite her desperate pleas for rescue, the phone line was abruptly cut amid the sounds of continued gunfire. On Saturday, paramedics from the Palestinian Red Crescent Society managed to reach the area, which had been closed off as an active combat zone.

Among the wreckage, they discovered the black Kia car Hind had been traveling in, its windscreen and dashboard shattered by gunfire. Inside, Hind and five others were found dead, all bearing signs of gunfire and shelling.

A short distance away lay the charred remnants of another vehicle, identified as the ambulance dispatched to retrieve Hind. Tragically, its crew, Yusuf Al Zeino, and Ahmed Al Madhoun were killed when the ambulance was bombed by Israeli forces upon arrival at the scene on January 29th.

Hind’s mother, before her daughter’s body was discovered, expressed her agonizing wait, stating she was waiting for her daughter “any moment, any second.” She demanded accountability, questioning, “How many more mothers are you waiting to feel this pain? How many more children do you want to get killed?”

Unicef believes that nearly all children in Gaza are now in need of mental health support. With their lives shattered, even when there is a lasting ceasefire, many will be left with terrible losses that they will struggle to overcome.

The rules of war stipulate that medical personnel must be protected and not targeted in a conflict, and that injured people must be given the medical care they need — to the fullest practical extent and with the least possible delay. This tragic incident underscores the urgent need for adherence to these principles and accountability for violations.
