In a devastating turn of events, Baghlan province in northern Afghanistan was ravaged by flash floods triggered by seasonal rains, leaving a trail of destruction and claiming at least 50 precious lives, as reported by a Taliban official on Friday.

The aftermath of the floods has wrought havoc on homes and property across multiple districts, with Edayatullah Hamdard, the provincial director of Natural Disaster Management, expressing fears that the death toll may escalate as numerous individuals remain missing.

Adding to the distress, the capital city of Kabul also fell victim to the sudden deluge, compounding the crisis. Abdullah Janan Saiq, the Taliban’s spokesperson for the State Ministry for Natural Disaster Management, disclosed that rescue teams have been swiftly mobilized to provide essential aid to the affected areas, with the rescue operation being the paramount concern for authorities at present. Saiq pledged to furnish more precise statistics regarding casualties and damages once available.

This latest catastrophe follows closely on the heels of another tragedy in April, where heavy rains and flash flooding claimed the lives of at least 70 individuals in Afghanistan.

The toll on infrastructure and livelihoods was immense, with thousands of homes, mosques, and schools damaged, leaving swathes of the population in dire need of humanitarian assistance. Agriculture, a cornerstone of livelihoods in the region, has suffered severe losses, compounded by the tragic death of 2,500 animals in the relentless deluge, as per the Taliban’s shared input.
