Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari’s inspection visit to Shaniwar Wada was aborted due to severe traffic congestion in the area. Gadkari was scheduled to assess the location of a proposed four-lane underground corridor from Shaniwar Wada to Swargate and from Saras Baug to Shaniwar Wada.
The minister’s flight landed late at Pune Airport, causing a delay in his schedule. By the time his convoy reached the Shaniwar Wada site at around 11:25 a.m., the traffic had come to a standstill. Despite adequate traffic police presence, the combination of morning rush hour, heavy rain, and crowd buildup led to massive traffic jams.
The traffic police had temporarily halted traffic moving from the rear of Shaniwar Wada towards the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) building and from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Bridge towards Shaniwar Wada, further exacerbating the congestion.
Upon arriving at the site, Gadkari paid floral tributes to Bharatiya Jan Sangh founder Syama Prasad Mookerjee. However, due to the severe traffic jam, he decided to abort the inspection visit and assured that he would return at a later date.
Local residents and commuters expressed frustration over the traffic situation, with some highlighting the need for infrastructure projects like the proposed underground corridor to alleviate congestion.
In a separate event, Gadkari inaugurated the International Workshop on ‘Sustainable Tunnelling for Better Life’ at MIT World Peace University (MIT-WPU) and launched the Centre of Excellence for Tunnelling and Underground Construction. The Centre aims to promote research and training in tunnelling and underground construction, with a focus on sustainable infrastructure development.
Gadkari emphasized the importance of tunnelling in India’s infrastructure plans, citing upcoming projects valued at ₹2.5 to ₹3 lakh crore. He stressed the need for cost-effective technologies, sustainable fuels, and increased research and training in the field.
