The price of tomatoes is soaring at an alarming pace in the country, which has not only disrupted the budgets of the middle class but also brought them to tears. Recently, in some parts of the country, prices have reached up to Rs 300 per kg. However, this situation has turned out to be a blessing in disguise for some individuals. A farmer named Rajesh from the Chamarajanagar region in Karnataka has sold 800 bags of tomatoes, yielding a sale of nearly 40 lakhs. With this income, he has purchased a luxury SUV for his family.

Karnataka stands as one of the largest tomato producers in the country, boasting regions like Kolar and Chamarajanagar known for tomato cultivation. This Karnataka-based farmer owns a 12-acre land plot from which he reaped the tomatoes. If prices remain stable, the farmers estimate a profit of over 1 crore. Explaining the reason for his luxurious acquisition, the farmer seeks companionship, highlighting his stable financial condition. He has also faced rejection, as many families still show bias towards government jobs. Farmer’s parents have expressed that agriculture still holds potential if conditions align, and they do not see it as a dying industry.

The skyrocketing tomato prices are attributed to a sudden rise in temperatures across India, leading to pest infestations in tomato crops. The ultimate result has been diminished yields and a shortage of crops in the market. This has caused inflated market rates and even instances of theft registered across the country. However, places like Bangalore still maintain bearable tomato prices, ranging from Rs 100 to Rs 120 per kg. Due to the high tomato prices, numerous food chains have ceased supplying tomatoes in their offerings. For instance, McDonald’s has discontinued the inclusion of tomato slices in their burgers.
