Thailand will lift visa restrictions on visits to Taiwan and India starting next month and lasting until May 2024 in a bid to attract more tourists during the peak season, a government official announced on Tuesday. China was Thailand’s main tourist market before the outbreak, attracting 10 million visitors, down from 39 million in 2019.

In September, visa requirements for Chinese tourists ended. The most recent government figures show that between January and October 29, 22 million tourists visited Thailand and spent 927.5 billion baht ($25.67 billion).

According to spokesman Chai Wacharonke, “Travelers from Taiwan and India can stay in Thailand for up to 30 days.” With more than 1.2 million visitors so far this year, India has been Thailand’s fourth-largest tourism source market, after only Malaysia, China, and South Korea. The travel industry seems to be expanding within India as more airlines and accommodation companies focus on the sector.

Thailand hopes to welcome about 28 million tourists this year, and the travel industry hopes to offset the country’s disappointing exports that have led to limited economic growth.
