Trinamool Congress MP Kalyan Banerjee was suspended for a day on Tuesday for his alleged unruly behavior during a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) meeting on the Waqf Bill. Sources reveal that Banerjee, a JPC member, was suspended for a day and two meetings under Lok Sabha Rules 261 and 374(1)(2) for using “unparliamentary” language toward committee chairperson Jagdambika Pal and smashing a glass bottle, which he threw at Pal. The motion for his suspension passed with nine votes in favor and eight against.
The incident occurred during a heated exchange with BJP’s Abhijit Gangopadhyay when Banerjee broke a glass water bottle, injuring his thumb and index finger. He was given first aid and later escorted back to the room by AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi and AAP leader Sanjay Singh. The JPC, chaired by the BJP’s Jagdambika Pal, was hearing views from retired judges and lawyers when opposition members questioned their relevance to the bill.
On Monday, the JPC had met with officials from the Ministry of Minority Affairs to discuss the bill. Opposition members criticized the consultative process, accusing the government of pushing the bill for political motives, specifically targeting the Muslim community. AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi gave a detailed critique, while Kalyan Banerjee questioned whether Waqf, which exists in Allah’s name, is legally recognized by the state.
BJP members supported the bill, arguing it was necessary to reform Waqf property management and improve transparency. The Waqf (Amendment) Bill 2024 proposes key reforms like digitizing records, stricter audits, and legal measures to reclaim illegally occupied Waqf properties.
