In a controversial statement, Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Arup Chakraborty targeted striking doctors, saying, “You may go home or go about with your boyfriend, but if a patient dies… we won’t save you.” He made these remarks at a rally in Bankura, West Bengal, on Sunday.

Chakraborty’s statement comes amidst the ongoing doctors’ strike over the rape and murder of a junior doctor at Kolkata’s R G Kar Medical College and Hospital. He warned that public anger could turn against the doctors if their strike affects patients’ lives.

When questioned about his statement, Chakraborty stood by his words, saying, “Doctors are striking, and if people don’t get treatment, naturally, their anger will fall on them. We can’t save them.”

This statement has sparked controversy, especially after the recent attack on protesting doctors at R G Kar hospital by miscreants. Some TMC leaders have supported the protesters, while others have defended the Mamata Banerjee government.

TMC leader Udayan Guha has previously threatened to “break the fingers” of those criticizing the Chief Minister, while MP Kalyan Banerjee warned that the party would boycott artists who speak out against the government.

Chakraborty’s statement has added fuel to the fire, with many questioning the TMC’s stance on the issue.
