Baba Ziauddin Siddique, a three-time Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) in 1999, 2004 and 2009, in the state of Maharashtra for the Vandre West constituency and former Minister of State for Food & Civil Supplies (FDA) and Labour under Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh between 2004 and 2008, has died after being shot by three unidentified persons in Bandra, Mumbai, on October 12.

The firing took place outside his son and MLA from Bandra East, Zeeshan Siddique’s office near Colgate Ground in Nirmal Nagar. Three attackers fired multiple times. Two attackers were taken into custody. Then he was taken to the Lilavati Hospital, which confirmed the news of his death. This incident comes ahead of the Maharashtra Assembly elections.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde said, “This is a very unfortunate incident, and I have spoken to the doctors and the police. Two have been arrested; the accused are from UP and Haryana. The third accused is absconding. We have instructed the Mumbai Police to take strict action against those who take law and order into their own hands. I am sure the Mumbai Police will soon arrest the third accused… strict action will be taken against the accused.”

Ajit Pawar wrote on his X account, “The incident of firing on NCP leader, former minister of state, my colleague Baba Siddique, who has been in the legislature for a long time, is very unfortunate, reprehensible, and painful. I was shocked to know that he died in this incident. I have lost my good companion, friend. I strongly condemn this cowardly attack. I pay my heartfelt tribute to Baba Siddique.”

“The incident will be thoroughly investigated, and strict action will be taken against the attackers. The mastermind behind the attack will also be traced. With the death of Baba Siddique, we have lost a good leader who fought for the minority brothers and strived for all-religious harmony. His demise is a great loss for the NCP. I join the grief of Zeeshan Siddique, the Siddique family, and his workers.”

Sharad Pawar wrote on his X account, “The state’s deteriorating law and order situation is a matter of concern. It is sad that former state minister Baba Siddique was shot dead in the country’s financial capital, Mumbai. If the Home Minister and the rulers will take the state’s vehicle forward so leniently, then it can be a warning signal for the common people. This not only needs to be investigated but also people in power need to accept responsibility and step down from their posts. Heartfelt tribute to Baba Siddique. Condolences to his family.”
