THE UNITED KINGDOM AND GAZA-PRESENT STATE OF AFFAIRS

On Tuesday, David Cameron, the foreign minister of the United Kingdom, expressed his concern that Israel may have violated international law in Gaza. He added that although Israel was compliant, there were still unanswered concerns. When asked if Israel would face a challenge over proportionality at the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague during a question-and-answer session with MPs, Cameron replied that the position was “close to that.” While supporting Israel’s right to self-defense against Hamas attacks, Britain has also urged Israel’s military to exercise moderation and adhere to international law while carrying out its offensive in Gaza, which has completely destroyed the Palestinian enclave.
While acknowledging that particular instances had raised doubts about whether Israel had infringed international law, Cameron refrained from openly answering MPs’ concerns about whether he had received legal advice to that effect.
“Am I worried that Israel has taken action that might be in breach of international law, because this particular premises has been bombed, or whatever? Yes, of course,” Cameron responded to inquiries from the foreign affairs committee of parliament. According to Cameron, there was always a “question mark” on whether any specific incidence violated international law, which attorneys would investigate and then provide him with recommendations on.
“The advice has been so far, that they (Israel) have the commitment, the capability and the compliance (with international law), but on lots of occasions that is under question.”
U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken urged Israeli leaders to take more action on Tuesday to prevent further harm to civilian infrastructure and to non-combatants in the face of mounting international concern over the high number of Palestinian deaths from the Israeli assault and a worsening humanitarian crisis.
Elsewhere, Israel’s ambassador to the UK is also being called out in a UK petition for “advocating a genocidal act” in Gaza, where Israel has killed at least 22,700 Palestinians in its three-month offensive. Many voices are demanding accountability in the wake of her recent comments.
The British Foreign Secretary David Cameron has also received a letter from Labour MP Afzal Khan demanding that the government respond to Israeli ambassador, Hotovely’s remarks with “stern denunciation.” Tzipi Hotovely made a “clear call for genocide” of Palestinians on national British radio, which prompted the British to demand her expulsion.
She made it clear to LBC radio host Iain Dale that Israel’s military needs to strike Gaza’s civilian infrastructure. “Every school, every mosque, every second house, has an access to tunnels,” alluding to the Hamas resistance movement’s network of tunnels that were constructed beneath Gaza. “That’s an argument for destroying the whole of Gaza, every single building,” Dale said, causing Hotovely to ask, “Do you have another solution, how to destroy the underground tunnel city?”
Hotovely, who is well-known for her radical opinions, categorically rejected the notion of the so-called two-state solution, stating that the possibility of a future Palestinian state was “absolutely no.”
