The courageous individuals who serve in the military demonstrate unwavering dedication by risking their lives daily to safeguard our nation. Regrettably, the stark reality is that since 2001, an average of 140 soldiers have perished annually in combat. These fallen soldiers are revered and commemorated for their selflessness, yet it is crucial to comprehend the profound impact of these casualties on both our military and our country.

Following the tragic demise of Agniveer Amritpal Singh, a 21-year-old who succumbed to a self-inflicted injury, the Indian Army disclosed that an average of 100-140 soldiers have taken their own lives each year since 2001. Distressingly, over the past two decades, more than 2,000 soldiers have tragically ended their lives. The Army further stated that military funerals are not granted for cases of suicide.

Upon meeting with the family of Agniveer Amritpal Singh, who tragically ‘died by suicide,’ Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann declared, “We shall bestow upon him the status of a martyr. A stadium shall be constructed in his honour, as per the demands of the panchayat and the family. A statue shall be erected in his memory. Additionally, the family shall be provided with a government job. On behalf of the entire Punjab, we shall confer upon him the status of a martyr…We shall urge the central government to regularize Agniveers.”

While the loss of soldiers is an inevitable aspect of warfare, it remains imperative to persist in supporting and honoring those who serve and safeguard our nation. This entails furnishing resources and assistance to the families of fallen soldiers, as well as advocating for enhanced mental health services for our service members. Furthermore, we must strive towards discovering peaceful resolutions to conflicts, thereby diminishing the number of soldiers who perish in battle.

The sacrifice made by these fallen soldiers shall forever be etched in our collective memory, and it is our solemn obligation to pay homage and preserve their legacy. Let us continue to extend our unwavering support and remembrance to our valiant men and women in uniform, while simultaneously endeavoring towards a future where their sacrifice is rendered unnecessary.
