The United States, the European Union, and other concerned members discussed sanctions against Russia this week.

The United States, European Union, and other members gathered in Brussels this week to discuss Russia sanctions. This decision came ahead of the second anniversary of the start of the war in Ukraine. Officials claim that Washington and its allies will impose “robust” sanctions against Russia.

The United States and its allies will continue to pressure Russia by imposing new sanctions, as U.S.-backed military aid is uncertain. The Biden administration had run out of funds to support military operations in Kyiv. The request for additional funds is stagnant in the Republican-backed House of Representatives.

The sanction packages were not the main aim of the meeting in Brussels. However, officials claim that the allies have prepared packages marking Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The war began on February 24, 2022. Since then, tens of thousands of soldiers and civilians have died, and Ukrainian cities have turned to rubble.

Washington continues to stand its ground by reinforcing existing sanctions. With help from the European Union, the United Kingdom, and Ukraine, they will also draw up new measures at the sanctions coordination forum in Brussels.

An official states that the United States, the European Union, and the United Kingdom had measured the impact of the previous sanctions. These sanctions included the Russian industrial base, the economy, and other challenges and recommendations.

Moving forward, Washington will continue to combat the rising problem of sanction evasion. The United States aims to suspend Russian access to battlefield arms and ammunition. The European Union envoys also put forth other demands of the bloc’s 27 member nations in Brussels. The EU will organize its 13th package since the war began against Ukraine.

An EU official states that all delegations have accepted the proposal except one. One member nation continues to inspect the document and analyze its contents. This comment seemed to point out Hungary as one of the EU members.

New sanctions will not ban new industries. Approving such sanctions will require an agreement from all EU member nations. However, the EU has decided to ban approximately 200 people and entities.

The sanctions drawn up by the United States could include banning Russian state-owned institutions, people, and companies. It also includes minimizing Russia’s access to revenue generated by additional sectors of the economy.

The sanctions have churned out mixed results in the last two years. While Russia has not been able to access U.S. funds and resources, it has continued waging war and accessing third-party resources. Hence, it depends on perspective as to whether the sanctions have been successful or not.
