The Indian Navy’s Sumedha arrived in Maputo on Wednesday and will conduct joint Exclusive Economic Zone surveillance with the Mozambican Navy from November 23 to November 25, according to a statement from the defense ministry. Sumedha is on an extended deployment to Africa. Mozambique’s capital, Maputo, welcomed the ship on Tuesday, according to an official statement from the ministry.

It stated that the goal of the port call is to improve interoperability between the two navies, bolster maritime cooperation, and fortify long-standing diplomatic ties.

It said that the two Navies will engage professionally, go across the deck, have planning conferences, and conduct joint EEZ surveillance.

During the port call, the commanding officer will pay courtesy calls to a number of Mozambican dignitaries and government officials, such as the mayor of Maputo City and the Navy Commandant.

According to the ministry, bilateral relations between Mozambique and India have historically been cordial and friendly, and they both uphold the same values of democracy, development, and secularism.

Regular Joint Defence Working Group (JDWG) meetings are another way that bilateral defence cooperation is advanced, according to the statement.

“Indian Naval ships are regularly deployed overseas as part of the Indian Navy’s mission of building ‘bridges of friendship’ and strengthening international cooperation with friendly countries,” the statement said.

With its home port of Visakhapatnam, the Indian Navy’s Eastern Fleet includes INS Sumedha, which is commanded by the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Eastern Naval Command. Numerous weapon systems, sensors, cutting-edge communication and navigation systems, and electronic warfare suits are all installed on the ship.

Sumedha has carried out a number of missions related to humanitarian aid and disaster relief (HADR), maritime surveillance, coastal and offshore patrolling, and fleet support operations.
