Voting in 21 EU countries, including Germany and France, will conclude today, which is expected to shift from a centrist towards a more right and populist ideology, and it is expected to raise the number of more eurosceptic nationals. Opinion polls predict the pro-European liberals and Greens are expected to lose seats in these parliamentary elections to more right and conservative nationalists.
The European voters have seen a lot of setbacks in these past few years like the cost of living crisis, having concerns about growing migrations and the cost of green transitions, and are disturbed by rising geopolitical tensions, including the war with Ukraine. Now the far-right and populist parties have taken leverage of these while campaigning for the elections and have promised an alternative solution to address all of these problems.
European Greens, facing a backlash left, right, and centre from hard-pressed households, farmers, and industry over costly EU policies. For example, in France, forecasts by the liberal group Renew Europe have predicted grim results for French President Emmanuel Macron’s Renaissance Party, and it’s predicted Marine Le Pen’s Rassemblement National party will trounce the president’s Renaissance Party.
The European Parliament has said that it will release EU-wide exit polls around 18:30 GMT and then the first provisional votes at 21:00 GMT after the final EU votes in Italy have been cast.
