No one would have thought that the railways, which are considered the backbone of the economy, could be in such a bad condition. The country, which is suffering from poverty, inflation, unemployment, floods, and droughts, has rail and education problems as well. Rails accelerate the progress of the country. When a train coach reaches one station from another with a crowd of thousands, it does not carry only people; it carries a section of the country which is handling the economy. It carries hopes nurtured by these people and students who will run the country tomorrow.

Old Indian Railways remind us of huge coaches, old and rusty engines, and crowds of thousands. Sitting in them, we would pass the hours of the journey in a few moments. We never felt lonely on the way because we never knew when fellow travelers would become companions. This was not only because there was less crowd and the railway had a lot of seats in which people used to sit and talk to each other comfortably, and they would not even realise when the hour-long journey would end. There are many reasons for this, but it is true that the decline of the railways started only after the lockdown.

We have always heard from our leaders that we are moving ahead of western countries, but do they know that railways are considered very important in western countries? It is very important for the railways to run on time, follow the schedule, have enough seats and arrangements for the people, and pay attention to things like cleanliness. Railways are the only means of transport that can carry thousands of people from one place to another at a time, which we know even airplanes do not have such power. All the developed countries have taken good care of this, and the balance between time and railways contributes significantly to making the country developed.

There are many problems with our railways that need to be addressed. The issue of privatisation comes up, and if privatization or modernization happens suddenly, it is not considered good for any society. We have seen its impact in the last 2-3 years and how it can spoil the country. It is hollowing out the system of the country from within. We must also remember the rail accidents that happened on 2 June 2023 and 2024. Many arguments were given for these incidents, but no one knows the truth.

Even today, old technology machines, un-repaired railways and their systems, and worker negligence are reasons we see such incidents. If we talk about Bihar, all the trains going from Patna to Delhi are so crowded that it seems like luggage bags have been kept one above the other. There is also news of fire in many train bogies. The root causes of all these issues are doubling railway ticket prices, reducing the number of general class seats, increasing the number of AC coaches, and privatisation.

If we talk about some suggestions which can prove to be effective, the most important among them would be laying new railway tracks and running new trains. The new government will have to first work on improving the condition of the railways. Also, for safety, old machines should be removed and new machines used. Railways should be repaired, and employees should be given proper training. Ticket rates should also be reduced so that daily commuters can travel without any fear, and the government should assure that people can get seats in exchange for tickets.
