In a bold move signalling a generational shift, India’s cricket selectors have opted to exclude seasoned campaigners Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane from the forthcoming tour of South Africa. Both esteemed veterans, aged 35, have been left out due to recent struggles in accumulating runs, paving the way for emerging younger talents to take centre stage.
For Pujara, the signs of waning fortunes have been evident for a while. While he managed to break a two-year century drought with a splendid innings in Bangladesh at the end of 2022, consistently substantial scores have since eluded him. Following that innings, he has only mustered a meager 211 runs in 10 innings, with a solitary score beyond the half-century mark. His underwhelming performance against Australia at home, where he typically excels, coupled with a lackluster impact in the World Test Championship at the Oval, contributed to his uncertain position.
Despite showcasing glimpses of his capabilities while playing for Sussex in county cricket, Pujara’s domestic outings in tournaments like the Irani Cup and Vijay Hazare Trophy failed to bolster his case for selection. While his tenacity and determination to regain top form have been palpable, the challenge seems to lie in combating the effects of age and potentially diminished reflexes.
The omission of stalwarts Pujara and Rahane, who have been linchpins in Indian cricket, underscores a strategic shift towards rejuvenation and a desire to infuse fresh talent into the team composition. As India prepares for the challenging tour of South Africa, this move signals a clear intent to chart a new course and embrace the evolving landscape of the sport.
