The CBFC informs the court that it considers all factors and ensures that the sentiments of religious or other groups are not offended before granting certification to any film.

The Punjab and Haryana High Court on Saturday dismissed a petition seeking the revocation of the screening certificate for the film “Emergency” after the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) informed the court that the film has not yet been approved for public viewing. “The certification of the movie is still under review and has not been granted at this time. It will be issued in accordance with the applicable rules and regulations. If anyone has any concerns, they may bring them to the board’s attention,” stated Satya Pal Jain, Additional Solicitor General of India, representing the CBFC. He emphasized that the CBFC considers all relevant aspects and ensures that no religious or other groups’ sentiments are hurt before granting a certificate to any film.

Actor-politician Kangana Ranaut’s upcoming political drama “Emergency” has stirred controversy due to its sensitive theme, with the Shiromani Akali Dal calling for a ban on the grounds of “misrepresentation” of the Sikh community. The petition, filed by Mohali residents Gurinder Singh and Jagmohan Singh, both baptized Sikhs and social workers, demanded the revocation of any certificate granted by the CBFC and proposed that the film be reviewed by prominent Sikh figures before its release.

The petition also requested that the CBFC remove scenes allegedly “targeting the Sikh community through the portrayal of false and misleading facts” and called for criminal charges against the filmmakers for allegedly defaming the Sikh community. The movie, which depicts the turbulent period of the 1975 national emergency, is scheduled for release on September 6. In light of the CBFC’s statement, the high court bench, comprising Chief Justice Sheel Nagu and Justice Anil Kshetarpal, decided to dismiss the petition. The court’s detailed order on the proceedings is still awaited.
