In the latest updates on the Kolkata rape-murder case, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) organized a 12-hour ‘Bangla Bandh’ in West Bengal today. This was in response to the police action taken against the participants of the ‘Nabanna Abhijan’ rally on Tuesday. TMC workers took a stand against the bandh called by the BJP, organizing counter-protests at multiple locations. This resulted in a physical altercation between the workers of the two parties.

Amidst the current situation, the daily routine of people in the state has been somewhat disrupted. There have been attempts by BJP workers to disrupt railway and bus services, leading to police intervention. While schools and colleges are still open, there has been a noticeable decrease in attendance.

In a recent development, several BJP leaders, namely Locket Chatterjee, Rahul Sinha, and Roopa Ganguly, were taken into custody by the police due to their participation in a protest. Additionally, Suvendu Adhikari, the Opposition Leader, joined the demonstrators in Nandigram. Adhikari declared that if the perceived police repression did not cease promptly, the party would take action to ‘stall’ the state of West Bengal. In Kolkata, over 200 individuals were detained, and multiple people were injured in various areas of the city as the police took action against demonstrators who were trying to march towards the state secretariat to demand the resignation of Mamata Banerjee.

The government has categorically stated that it will not tolerate disruptions on Wednesday. Alapan Bandopadhyay, the chief advisor to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, has urged citizens to refrain from participating in any bandh. He assured that all necessary measures would be implemented to safeguard normalcy and ensure that people’s daily lives remain unaffected.

The demonstration, known as the rally, was arranged by a newly formed student organization called ‘Paschimbanga Chhatra Samaj.’ The rally aimed to protest the reported rape and murder of a female trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on August 9.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) plans to consult medical experts from AIIMS Delhi to determine whether the primary suspect, Sanjay Roy, acted alone in committing the crime. Sanjay Roy is presently in judicial custody. In addition to the rape and murder investigation, the CBI is also looking into financial irregularities involving Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
