Delhi Lieutenant Governor (LG) V.K. Saxena has assigned Domestic Minister Kailash Gahlot to hoist the national flag at the state-level Autonomy Day event at Chhatrasal Stadium. This decision, announced through a communication from the LG’s office to Chief Secretary Naresh Kumar, has stirred up tensions between the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government and the LG’s office. The LG’s secretary, Ashish Kundra, confirmed that necessary arrangements would be made for Gahlot to hoist the national flag on August 15.

AAP Government’s Response

Earlier, the General Administration Department (GAD) of the Delhi government had refused to follow the instructions from GAD Minister Gopal Rai, who had recommended that Education Minister Atishi should raise the national flag, as desired by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. The GAD stated that the Chief Minister, currently in Tihar Jail due to a corruption case, does not have the authority to assign this responsibility to another minister. This refusal by the GAD added to the ongoing struggle between the Delhi government and the LG’s office.

In response to the LG’s decision, the AAP government expressed its displeasure, viewing it as an overreach of the LG’s authority. The decision to appoint Gahlot, bypassing other senior government leaders, is expected to further strain the already tense relations between the two sides.

Independence Day Event Preparations

Every year, the Independence Day celebrations in Delhi are held at Chhatrasal Stadium, where the Chief Minister usually addresses the public. However, this year, due to the ongoing legal troubles of Arvind Kejriwal, who is entangled in the alleged excise policy scam, the situation has become more complicated. Despite the Chief Minister’s request for Atishi to hoist the flag in his place, the LG’s office insisted that no official communication from Kejriwal had been received, leading to the assignment of Kailash Gahlot instead.

This controversy over the flag hoisting reflects the larger power struggle between the Delhi government and the LG’s office, with each side asserting its authority over important state functions. As the preparations for the Autonomy Day event continue, this decision is likely to widen the political rift between the AAP government and the LG’s secretariat.
