Originally planned for November 17, the consular camp in Canada was intended to provide Indian-origin Hindus and Sikhs with an opportunity to renew important life certificates.

On Sunday, the Brampton Triveni Community Centre in Canada canceled a planned life certificate event organized by the Indian Consulate, citing intelligence indicating a “very high and imminent threat level of violent protests.” Scheduled for November 17, the consular camp was intended to assist Indian-origin Hindus and Sikhs in renewing critical life certificates.

In a statement, the Brampton Triveni Community Centre said, “Please be advised that the Life Certificate Event scheduled at Brampton Triveni Mandir by the Indian Consulate on November 17, 2024, has been cancelled. This decision follows intelligence from Peel Regional Police indicating an extremely high and imminent threat level of violent protests.” The community center urged Peel Police to address circulating threats targeting Brampton Triveni Mandir and called for security measures to protect both the Canadian Hindu community and the general public.

“We apologize to all community members who were relying on the event and are deeply saddened that Canadians feel unsafe attending Hindu temples. We call on Peel Police to take action against the threats directed at Brampton Triveni Mandir and provide security assurances to the Canadian Hindu community and the general public,” the temple administration stated. The Brampton Triveni Mandir and Community Centre is a spiritual hub for Hindus and others, providing a space for religious activities like Puja, Kirtan, Sewa, and Pravachan.

Earlier, on November 3, a consular camp at the Hindu Sabha Temple in Brampton near Toronto was violently disrupted by pro-Khalistani supporters, an incident that drew widespread condemnation both within Canada and internationally. Videos from the scene showed physical altercations, with individuals striking each other with poles on the temple grounds. Peel Regional Police responded to the incident, noting that rising tensions had led to physical and assaultive behavior during the demonstration.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi condemned the “deliberate attack” on the Hindu temple, denouncing attempts to intimidate Indian diplomats as “cowardly.” He urged Canadian authorities to ensure justice and uphold the rule of law, stating, “Such acts of violence will never weaken India’s resolve.” Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also condemned the incident, emphasizing that every Canadian should be able to practice their faith freely and safely.
