Rescue operations are in progress to evacuate eight workers trapped in Telangana’s Srisailam Left Bank Canal (SLBC) tunnel. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) is advancing inside the tunnel to rescue the workers, who have been trapped for nearly 48 hours. Telangana Minister J. Krishna Rao stated that the chances of survival in these conditions are “not that good.”
“The muck inside the tunnel has piled up too high, making it impossible to walk through. Rescuers are using rubber tubes and wooden planks to navigate,” PTI quoted Rao, who personally entered the tunnel.
The collapse occurred on Saturday morning when a three-meter section of the roof of an under-construction stretch of the SLBC tunnel collapsed at the 14 km mark near Domalapenta in Nagarkurnool district, Telangana. This incident took place just four days after construction work resumed following a prolonged hiatus. While some workers managed to escape, eight remain trapped.
NDRF officials informed ANI that the rescue team is actively working to drain the accumulated water inside the tunnel. However, debris continues to block access, preventing confirmation of the trapped workers’ exact location.
NDRF Deputy Commandant Sukhendu Datta told ANI that the team has covered approximately 13.5 kilometers inside the tunnel, mainly using locomotives and conveyor belts. “Yesterday, around 10 PM, we went inside to assess the situation,” he added.
